Platform guide

Airbnb listing photo requirements

Horizontal, high-resolution, and ranked on the cover photo — Airbnb explicitly rewards good imagery.

The short answer

Airbnb recommends horizontal, high-resolution photos and requires a minimum number of images before a listing goes live. The cover photo materially affects click-through in search, so lead with the most distinctive, well-lit space rather than the entrance. Caption every photo with the room name — Airbnb shows captions in the gallery and guests use them to orient themselves.

Which photo goes first

The most distinctive well-lit space — the view, the living room, or the standout kitchen.

The first image is the only one most people ever see. It decides whether the listing gets opened, so it should be the brightest, widest, most representative frame you have — not the one that happens to be first in your camera roll.

Getting more out of a Airbnb listing

  • Photograph the sleeping arrangement clearly. Bed count and configuration is the most-asked pre-booking question.
  • Show the kitchen's actual working equipment — coffee setup, cooktop, dishwasher.
  • Include the bathroom, however small. Missing bathroom photos suppress bookings.
  • Guests book on a phone. Check your cover photo at thumbnail size before you publish.

Stay on the right side of the rules

Every major platform prohibits photos that misrepresent the property. Correcting exposure, white balance, and wall geometry is fine — those fix the camera, not the unit. Adding furniture, erasing damage, or widening a room is not, and it's the fastest way to lose a listing and a showing at the same time. See enhancement vs. virtual staging for where the line sits.
