Platform guides
Listing photo requirements, platform by platform
Same unit, same shoot — but each portal crops, compresses, and ranks your photos differently. Here's what each one expects.
The short answer
Shoot once, at full resolution, in landscape, with everything lit — that set works everywhere. Then adapt per platform: Zillow and Rentfaster reward complete galleries, Airbnb ranks on the cover photo, Facebook Marketplace crops near-square and compresses hard, and Craigslist caps how many images you can post at all.
Zillow
Landscape, high-resolution, and heavily gallery-driven — the first photo does most of the work.
Airbnb
Horizontal, high-resolution, and ranked on the cover photo — Airbnb explicitly rewards good imagery.
Facebook Marketplace
Square-ish crops in the feed, aggressive compression, and a mobile-first audience.
Craigslist
A hard image cap and small display sizes — every slot has to earn its place.
Rentfaster
Canadian rental portal with a gallery-heavy layout and amenity filters that reward complete sets.
What every platform wants
- —Landscape, full resolution. Every portal downsizes; none of them upsizes. Upload the original file from your phone.
- —Consistent white balance. A gallery that jumps between orange and blue rooms looks like photos of three different apartments.
- —Walkthrough order. Entry, living, kitchen, bedrooms, bath, then amenities. Renters build a mental floor plan from the sequence.
- —Amenity photos. Parking, laundry, storage, balcony, yard. Unphotographed amenities are disbelieved amenities.
- —No text overlays or watermarks. They read as syndicated or spam content and some platforms suppress them.
- —Honest images. Corrected light and geometry are fine. Added furniture and erased damage are not, and every major platform's terms say so.
